From Stress to Rest: Massage Therapy and the Nervous System Connection

From Stress to Rest: Massage Therapy and the Nervous System Connection

During the Fall 2025 semester, Nichole Csogi completed an internship at Body & Soul Massage as part of Salem State University’s Health Care Studies Program. Her internship project explored how massage therapy helps reduce stress and improve sleep quality—two of the most common concerns we hear from clients every day.

Nichole chose Body & Soul Massage because it offered a real-world look at both the therapeutic benefits of massage and the role that non-traditional, integrative care plays in overall health and wellness.

Here’s what she shared about her experience:

“Doing my internship at Body & Soul Massage was an incredible learning experience. I got to see firsthand how massage helps clients reduce stress and sleep better, while also learning the administrative side of the business—like scheduling appointments and managing client information. This experience taught me so much about both the practice itself and the behind-the-scenes work that goes into supporting clients’ wellness. I’m so grateful for the opportunity and want to sincerely thank the team at Body & Soul Massage for welcoming me and guiding me throughout my internship.”

Understanding Stress, Sleep, and the Nervous System

During her internship, Nichole focused on the connection between massage therapy, stress relief, and sleep. Many clients come in feeling overwhelmed—tight shoulders, busy minds, and difficulty winding down at night—making Body & Soul Massage a natural place to explore how massage supports the nervous system.

When stress is high, the body often stays in a constant state of “alert.” This can make it harder to relax, let go of tension, or fall asleep. Massage therapy helps guide the body into its natural rest-and-restore state, calming the nervous system and allowing muscles to soften, breathing to slow, and the mind to settle.

This shift is one of the main reasons clients often report feeling lighter, calmer, and more grounded after a massage session.

Real Client Feedback, Real Results

As part of her project, Nichole gathered simple survey responses from clients following their massage sessions. Many shared that they felt noticeably less stressed and experienced improvements in sleep—such as falling asleep faster or waking up fewer times during the night.

Their feedback closely reflected what research supports and what massage therapists observe daily: when the nervous system is supported, the body is better able to rest and recover. Massage may also encourage the release of natural chemicals that help regulate mood and sleep, adding to its calming effects.

A Meaningful Internship Experience for Health Care Studies Students

Nichole’s internship highlights the valuable opportunity available to Salem State University Health Care Studies students at Body & Soul Massage. Interns gain insight into the clinical benefits of massage therapy while also learning how a wellness-based practice operates—from client care and communication to scheduling and day-to-day operations.

Just as importantly, interns are exposed to how non-traditional and complementary care can support health alongside more conventional medical approaches.

What Nichole discovered—and what we see every day—is that massage doesn’t just help muscles relax. It helps the entire nervous system reset. When stress levels decrease, better sleep and overall balance often follow, making massage therapy a gentle, natural way to support whole-person wellness.

A Place to Learn, Heal, and Grow

At Body & Soul Massage, we believe massage therapy is more than relaxation—it’s a powerful form of care that supports the nervous system, relieves pain, and helps people move through life with greater ease. For our clients, that means thoughtful, therapeutic care rooted in experience and education. For our interns, it means a hands-on opportunity to learn how massage therapy and non-traditional care fit into real-world wellness.

We’re proud to partner with Salem State University’s Health Care Studies Program and support the next generation of health care professionals through meaningful, practical learning experiences. Whether you’re seeking consistent, professional massage therapy or exploring a future in integrative health, Body & Soul Massage is a place where care, education, and community come together.
